Shake Hands, Kiss Babies and Develop Spider Senses

In business, time is money, period. When you have a million things to accomplish on your to-do list, the people you spend your time with on a daily basis either compliment your efforts or become an obstacle you need to quickly maneuver around. Being a very good judge of character is a key factor in my everyday game play in the world of business and lifestyle.

It’s one of those things where you either have it or you don’t, there’s no in between. Developing this spider-sense of sorts comes over time and can’t be picked up overnight. The only way to perfect it is to get out from behind your cozy little desk and go do business with, meet, greet, have conversations with, go to dinner with and get to know as many people as possible. The outcomes of all of these situations will mold you as an effective decision maker and as a killer business person.

Why does this matter you ask? Being able to read an individual can be the difference between spending 2 years working with an individual that is unfit for your accompaniment or spotting inefficiencies right away and moving on to a better candidate. It can also be the difference between being able to overlook small inefficiencies in an individual that are minor compared to the skills and talents that they can bring to your company with a bit of training.

I see a lot of new school entrepreneurs missing out on this skill set because of the internet and social media. I work quite a bit online myself, BUT you can’t forget about STP, or seeing the people. The difference between emailing or texting an individual compared to a good face to face is magnificent to say the least. Asking someone a question face to face yields eye movement, body language and an instant reaction.

These are the elements that create the spectacular spider senses we talked about earlier. Don’t be scared, talk to everyone and see what happens. Stare ‘em right in the eyes and pay close attention. Get nervous. Savor every uncomfortable second of it. You will become a killer judge of character, in business and in life.
