Networking Tips For Your Office Christmas Party

08.30.2009 · Posted in Uncategorized

Most employees will see this year’s company Christmas party as the ideal opportunity to relax, eat, drink and get themselves in the festive spirit. If you’re smart you can do all of these things and still find time to accomplish some expert networking which could stand you in good stead long in to the New Year. While your colleagues are still nursing hangovers you could be on your way to a promotion, a pay raise or even a new company.

All you need to learn is the importance of networking and how to do it.

Why network?

Social gatherings, such as the company Christmas party, are the ideal way to meet new people who may have an impact on your life. Simply put, you just never know who you may end up with in the queue for the buffet, and who they might know in turn! It’s an ideal opportunity to get your face recognised, particularly if you are new to the company or work in a small department of a much bigger firm. Networking is your chance to shine and an opportunity to gain or learn something.

Who’s on the guest list?

Well before the day of the Christmas party find out who is going to be there. Knowing who is on the guest list will allow you to plan who you want to talk to and network with. If potential clients are going to be there plan to meet up with them most importantly go in with a plan so you make time to network with all the right people.

Make a good impression

To be a successful networker you need to show yourself off to the best advantage. Dress for the occasion, don’t drink too much, retain control at all times and listen more than you talk. While its important to hold a conversation, you need to let people know you are a good listener with a professional attitude. Keep eye contact, don’t be too loud and make sure you show an interest in what people are saying. Try and remember names and make sure the people you chat with know your name otherwise your networking is unlikely to bear fruit.

Stand tall

It’s not just about good posture. Standing up straight will help you act in a confident manner, even if nerves get the better of you! Meeting people for the first time is likely to be awkward and daunting for most people, so the person who hides their nerves will be likely to command respect from those around and hopefully make a lasting impression.

Follow up the contacts you have made

If this year’s Christmas party has gone to plan then you should have made lots of new contacts. If people you meet have given you their contact information then they certainly won’t be surprised to hear from you again so email or call them as soon as you can. Don’t be put off if you have to re introduce yourself or jog a few memories, just remind them of what you spoke of and if they have promised you information or help be grateful.

Remember that every contact made will probably know someone else you’ll meet in the future so be graceful and respectful, you never know where it might lead you!
