No More Networking Meetings

Networking meetings, why do we go to them? Why? Because someone told us when we started out in business to network, network, network. It seemed like a good idea. Hand out your business cards, get a bunch of other people’s business cards, follow up and referrals will come pouring in. Right? Wrong? All too often you end up never calling the people you met, maybe except for (single guys) that cute copy saleswoman who approached you by the cracker and cheese plate. And referrals, did you give any? No. Because other than some small talk about the weather and the “my name is.. I sell…you really don’t know any of these people well enough to stake your hard-earned reputation on making a referral to them. Guess what? They feel the same way about you.

So again, why do you network? Because someone told you to! Does any of this make sense? Not really. The other thing that happens is because we all have our e-mail addresses on our cards we get inundated with e-mails from people inviting us to receive their free newsletter or some other mailbox junk we don’t want or need. We even get video mail from people now a days.

The other problem, if you think about it, is that most of the people are sales people just like you and are trying to sell you products that you don’t need or their services are so redundant, i.e. printers, IT guys, real estate agents, event planners or network marketers. I am not criticizing these professions but there are way too many of them showing up at the same events and trying to differentiate themselves.

In today’s environment of cluttered desks, busy schedules and card scanners that make it all to easy to fill up our Rolodex (you could spend 2 hours a week scanning business cards), there has to be a better way to go about building up your business, getting clients and making a decent income. Well there is and unless you figure it out quickly, like me you will get sick and tired of going to all these networking events and want to give up.
